A teaching tool that promotes literacy, critical analysis, and differentiated instruction while meeting the needs of all types of learners. The Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.) was co-created in 2005 by Gabriel Benn and Rick Henning, to give teachers and students a product that meets exact standards listed above. The creation of H.E.L.P. came out of a desire to use the influence of Hip Hop music on the 21st century student, to promote student interest in reading and strengthen their abilities in all five areas of literacy: phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, comprehension, writing, and fluency. The proven effectiveness of H.E.L.P. with the struggling readers at Rock Creek Academy, prompted Henning and Benn to form a partnership and a subsidiary company, Educational Lyrics, LLC. H.E.L.P. uses the socially conscious content and rich vocabulary found in the lyrics of Hip Hop artists such as Kanye West, Mos Def, and Lauryn Hill to create student-centered activities that motivating and promote higher-level thinking. Each month, new workbook titles are offered, featuring a new song, and over 60 workbook activities spanning across all reading levels and learning styles. The activities can be used with an entire class, in small groups, or as an independent activity. H.E.L.P. is meant for educators who are looking for a unique way to culturally connect to the diverse youth they serve. In order to reach this market Educational Lyrics seeks to develop corporate partners to provide HELP materials and trainings to urban and other appropriate schools for free. Specifically, Educational Lyrics seeks partnership with corporate enterprises interested in improving literacy and providing culturally relevant teaching materials to underserved populations.
